Many fourth graders have volunteered to be part of a new leadership club called the Clarke School Green Team. We’ve created this new club with the collaboration of the Swampscott High School Green Team organized by Brandy Wilbur who is the STEM teacher at the high school. (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) These two teams will be working together to create and implement projects and events dedicated to educating and promoting environmental awareness and hands-on learning that will benefit our entire school community. Our intent is to meet once a month to collaborate, plan and implement activities devoted to expanding our school’s understanding and experiences when learning about earth science.

We’ve met a few times already and the Clarke Green Team has had some great ideas about promoting focused on Earth Day 2018.  As part of a community out reach every student at the Clarke School will be decorating a Whole Foods Market grocery bag in honor of Earth Day and environmental awareness. We have been in contact with the regional manager of the Swampscott Whole Foods Market, Katie Lamie, and she enthusiastically agreed to be part of this project.  During Art class this week with Ms. Eisenberg, students will be decorating Whole Foods grocery bags with pictures, symbols and words celebrating Earth Day. These decorated bags will be returned to Whole Foods for groceries to be bagged in. These will go out in to the community as a reminder to be thoughtful about taking care of our planet. This week the Green Team will be going into every classroom to discuss this project.  I will also be teaching lessons in all classrooms about the importance of Earth Day. If you shop at Whole Foods be on the look out for the Clarke School Earth Day bags!
